Just Follow Jesus What Jesus Means When He Calls

Who were the men called by Jesus? Among the twelve disciples were two sets of brothers – Peter and Andrew, James and John – and a man named Matthew. If we were selecting individuals to follow Jesus, these men would have never been on our list. But Jesus saw something in them we could never see.

About the Author

Billy Joseph Stines

After serving for more than forty-three years in six churches scattered around North and South Carolina, Billy J. Stines formally retired from the gospel ministry on December 31, 2017. In retirement he has remained active in the local church and the Little River Baptist Association. After four years of service, he recently rotated off the Board of Directors for the State Baptist Convention of North Carolina. Throughout his ministry, he has participated in missions, taking trips to Brazil, Cuba, Armenia, and Gulfport, Mississippi following Hurricane Katrina. He is presently serving as part-time pastor at a small church a few miles from where he lives in Harnett County, North Carolina.

Throughout the years, his greatest support and encouragement has come from Susan, his loving wife and helpmate of over forty-six years. Together they are very proud of their two sons and their wives, as well as seven grandchildren under eight years of age—five boys and two girls. As you may guess, they try to spend as much time as possible with their family. Although he has written several dramas, created musicals and other special programs, as well as hundreds of messages and studies for the local church, Just Follow Jesus is Billy’s first attempt at writing a book. The Lord willing, there will be others in the future.

About the Book

Just Follow Jesus What Jesus Means When He Calls

How do you respond when someone very important gives you a call? You get all excited as you answer the phone and hear who is calling. Your heart pounds in your chest so hard its difficult to actually hear what is said. So you pause a second or two, take a deep breath and let it out slowly to force yourself to settle down. Then you listen to every word the caller says. It is that important.

Throughout his earthly ministry, Jesus Christ called people to follow him. His call was to relatively unknown people–fishermen, tax collectors, political rebels, and even one who would betray him. He called individuals that had great physical and spiritual needs, as well as those who thought they had everything. Some were deeply religious; others seldom gave any thought to religion. Men and women, rich and poor, young and old were on his call list. And his call was important. It dealt with matters of life and death. It was so important it threatened to change lives forever.

In Just Follow Jesus, we endeavor to explore Jesus’ call to the people he met during his brief earthly ministry. Each encounter was different and had profound implications for their lives. Some people gladly received his call, while others chose to reject it. These same encounters also have great significance for our lives today. How will you answer his call upon your life? It is my prayer that you will at least listen to his call and Just Follow Jesus.

Excerpts from Just Follow Jesus by Billy Joseph Stines

When the Lord God calls, we have choice to make–whether to follow him [or not]. If we pause long enough to debate all the issues involved in that call, more than likely, we will come up with some reason not to respond. [Just Follow Jesus, chapter 1, p. 20]

The world declares that is does not matter what you believe, as long as you believe in something and live a good life. The Bible tells us that how we live cannot save us, and it does matter what you believe. You must believe in Jesus Christ. [Just Follow Jesus, chapter 2, p.48]

The Lord knows there are times our desire to follow him is hindered by personal fears and weakness … And although our actions hurt, he still loves us even in our inconsistency. [Just Follow Jesus, chapter 3, p.64]

Following Jesus is obeying him to the best of our ability. [Just Follow Jesus, chapter 5, p.93]
